It is the universe and a gift from Deion Sanders.
Deion Sanders, a name that suggests athletic brilliance, has thrilled spectators with his remarkable abilities on the baseball diamond and football field. Sanders, often known as “Prime Time,” is beloved in the sports world for his talent and personality. However, Deion Sanders foot health has recently become a topic of serious concern, drawing significant attention to the challenges he has faced.
In the week before taking over as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders—now lovingly referred to as Coach Prime—scored a touchdown in the NFL and hit a home run in Major League Baseball. In the history of professional sports, he is the only player to have participated in both a World Series and a Super Bowl. He is a two-time university All-American and a first-ballot candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
His resume is just as varied off the field. He has worked as an NFL analyst and has embraced social media, rhythmically delivering inspirational quotes with a passionate voice that combines missionary and poetic elements.
In Elevate & Dominate: 21 Ways to Win On and Off the Field, his New York Times Best Selling book, he urged readers to “master the three W’s.” “You must desire it. You must put forth the effort. And you must win. What is your current level of desire?
Prime met with a team in his office near Folsom Field just weeks after moving to Boulder in December 2022, nine months before Colorado’s season opener against TCU. However, the topic of discussion was not football. The issue was Coach Prime’s health, specifically a persistent discomfort in his foot and severe pain in his left thigh.
Deion Sanders’ injury casts doubt on his coaching future.
Deion Sanders has struggled with a severe foot illness in recent years, which has significantly affected his life. Both fans and well-wishers are concerned about Deion Sanders health diabetes connection, which has garnered significant attention from the media.
There is still significant confusion over the precise type of injury and the circumstances that led to it. But the damage was severe enough to require serious medical attention. The public has attentively monitored the sequence of events, from the problem’s early beginnings to the next surgical treatments.
Deion Sanders health diabetes history may have contributed to the severity of the injury. Diabetes often leads to complications, particularly in the foot area. Previous surgery or other underlying medical issues could have exacerbated the problem.
Deion Sanders meets with a specialist to discuss a foot injury.
Months later, in Coach Prime’s Boulder office, renowned health surgeons Dr. Don Jacobs and Max Wohlauer, both vascular specialists, and Dr. Kenneth Hunt, a foot and ankle specialist, listened attentively.
Coach Prime informed them that he experienced discomfort when performing leg curls or leg extenders and when riding a stationary bike. Because his third and fourth toes were not straight, they brushed against the top of his shoe, causing friction and pain in his left foot.
The physicians devised a strategy together with Coach Prime. They scheduled Coach Prime to emerge from the tunnel before the opening game at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
Coach Prime stated, “I just wanted to run out before my team,” as coaches often do.
Imaging of his left leg revealed chronic vascular disease, aneurysms, and blood clots in the upper thigh, near the groin.
Dr. Jacobs, a professor of vascular surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, stated that small fragments of the clot had broken off, falling down the artery and blocking it for a while.
Doctors proceeded to straighten the feet and remove the clots. Getting the blood flowing, which supplies tissues and muscles with oxygen and nutrition, was crucial.
The 57-year-old coach said a brief prayer before the procedure.
“I usually pray for the execution of God’s will,” he said. Those surgeons are all very qualified and skilled in their field. God loves me so much that he would never place someone incompetent in my place since I am on a mission for him; therefore, I don’t question them. I’m not concerned with results or anything.
Nothing was bothering me, threatening me, or making me feel fearful. Let’s proceed. Please ensure that I am alive and well; I am indifferent to whether you remove my entire foot or just my toes.
“I need to do some work.”
Chronic vascular disease often manifests in people over 65. Individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a history of smoking are more sensitive. People with limb illness in particular will experience pain during exercise, such as a leg cramp, which indicates a lack of blood flow. It hurts because the muscle isn’t receiving enough blood and oxygen.
Despite having top-notch physiology, Coach Prime does not fit any of the profiles of those most susceptible to vascular disease.
When I initially received the news, I contacted my mother and asked, ‘Ma, do we have a history of blood clots?’ “Yes, I have blood clots, and your uncle died from them a few years ago,” she remarked. “Thank you, Mom,” I said. He laughed as he related the incident to Good Morning America anchor Michael Strahan, saying, “I truly appreciate that.”

Deion Sanders’ foot surgery
With 16 years of experience as a foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Hunt is an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist and associate professor in the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopedics. He serves as the Denver Nuggets’ and CU Buffs’ team physician.
Hunt explained that to help him fit into his shoe without experiencing any discomfort, “I needed to remove a lot of the scar tissue and straighten the toes.”
One of the physicians visited Coach Prime at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus when he was still recovering from a nine-hour operation in June 2023.
The surgeon noted the location where they used a catheter to enter his body and clear veins in his leg, saying, “We put 21 stitches in your groin.”
Coach Prime interpreted it as a divine sign. Sanders wore the number 21 jersey during his NFL career.
In collaboration with Nike, Coach Prime, and the physicians developed unique orthotic footwear that features components to support the arch and balance, as well as additional space for the feet in the forefoot.
“The footwear is really helpful,” Sanders remarked. “I can’t wear any other kind of footwear, so I have to wear footwear with a great sole and a nice bottom.” These days, I find it difficult to wear formal shoes or anything with a firm sole. “It must have a thick sole and a rubber bottom,” he stated.
In order to maintain his mobility, Coach Prime has undergone 12 operations overall, including two at UCHealth. He works with an excellent team of sports trainers and physical therapists every day to maintain his skin-conditioned, tissues responsive, and feet straight.
His talent and reality place him in a unique realm. In addition to being one of the most genuine individuals I have ever dealt with, Coach Prime’s profile made working with him special. He is genuine. He was highly obedient to therapy and very kind. Hunt commented, “He puts in a lot of effort and maintains a positive attitude.”
Coach Prime has a unique message for males after what he’s been through medically: See a doctor and get checked out. Coach Prime acts as a coach for those dealing with medical issues and sees his primary care physician, Dr. Rich Penaloza.
You haven’t finished yet. You’ve only touched the surface of the glacier. There is so much more in you. You shouldn’t give up now. … Now is the time to leave. You should now insert your key into the engine. You should start your engine now.
“Now is the moment to hit your target.”
In front of the world on September 2, 2023, he put on orthotic shoes instead of a walking boot. With his trademark gold chain and gold cross swinging with every stride, he sprinted out of the tunnel.
“That was happiness,” he claims. “That was pure joy, and it was also pure adrenaline.”
Coach Prime recounted, “My foot was hurting so bad; it was throbbing. God, it was throbbing,” as the game’s score fluctuated from the conclusion of the third quarter into the fourth.
Colorado upset a team that participated in the previous year’s college football championship by winning 45-42.
Coach Prime has been operating again in the last few weeks. Although he admits that his speed has decreased since the peak of his professional career, he maintains that he can still defeat most 56-year-old men.
He adds that he could even surpass Boulder’s most popular homegirl and college football’s greatest mascot, Ralphie. What a spectacle it would be.
The season, the development of people around him, and the arrival of a grandchild in August are all things Coach Prime is looking forward to. Grandpa Prime.
More than anything, I’m excited about growth, development, and mobility. We are made to advance, to go for it, to go forward.
